Another where's my bottleneck thread?

Hi,

I've been spying on these forums for years. Got a bit out of touch with newer hardware so thought I'd make the effort to post a question :)

I'm unhappy with the performance of my system running some games (PES 2014, Chivalry, GRID2) and feel I should be able to squeeze more out of the base system in terms of FPS and reduction of lag.

Looking at my video card as a low cost area for improvement. I just upgraded my kids video card to an Radeon 6670 HD 2GB which seems to perform better than my gtx 560 (non ti)

I have my eye on a GIGABYTE AMD Radeon HD 7870 OC 2GB GDDR5.

My monitor max res is 1650x1050 which I'm OK with so I'm dont need to mega high resolution.

More expensive alternatives are buying a new mobo/CPU/RAM to get away from the AM2 chipset. I'd need to future proof myself for a few years to justify the spend so a switch to intel might be an idea.

I know an SSD would help in terms of loading times but I come from the Sinclair Spectrum era so I have patience :)

current specs are :-

PSU : Antec TruePower New 650W Modular PSU
GFX : GV-N56GOC-1GI Gigabyte GeForce GTX 560 Graphics Card 1GB DVI VGA
MOB: ALiveXFire-eSATA2 - http://www.asrock.com/mb/amd/alivexfire-esata2/
CPU :AMD Phenom X4 9650
RAM 8 GB DDR2
HDD: 3 x SATA
OS : Windows 8 64bit

Just looking for some idea's

Thanks

EDIT sorry wrong RAM spec in original post

More about bottleneck thread
  1. So...

    New GFX Card

    or

    New Motherboard, CPU and RAM

    ?
  2. I would say your CPU is whats holding the rig back, that chip was released early 2008. A platform upgrade I think is in order to get this rig in any way upgraded.

    Thanks

I'm going to run a few benchmarking tools over the weekend.

There are a few parts I've dragged along from previous systems.

Might try and overclock the cpu a bit see if it improves things in the short term.
  4. OK here is my plan

    Intel core i3-4130
    Asus Z87-K
    8gb DDR3

I'm going for an Intel haswell setup

Initially an i3 which I've worked out should give me double the performance of the phenom x4 but wont break the bank.

This is based on these two benchmarks

    i3

    AMD Phenom
    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Phenom+9500+Quad-Core&id=301

The motherboard gives me the option to upgrade to a beefier CPU with more cores later when games start using multithreading.
  5. Do you plan to overclock or get dual graphics cards later on?
If not, get a H87 board.
