Is there a requirement to have two CPUs on the Dell 1550? When we remove
the second processor, we get a "CPU Missing" message followed by a System
Halted.

Is it a BIOS error or OS error? Does it occur as the OS loads? Sounds like
it is HAL related and the HAL is configured for two CPUs. You can try
reinstalling the OS.

There could be two problems. Most multi-processor MBs require a
'terminator' in the 'unused' CPU socket. (Not all do, but many!) The
system documentation should tell you if that is true.

The second issue is the "CPU Missing" message and the "System Halt"
are possibly from the operating system. There is a process for
changing the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) in windows to account
for multi vs. single processors. Not a trivial thing to do, especially
since it requires modification of the basic system.

But... I gotta ask: "Why are you removing one CPU?"

It is without question a BIOS System Halt. No OS even starts to load.

No OS starts to load. System Halted is coming from the BIOS.

We removed one CPU because on startup we were getting an immediate (and
false) error message from BIOS about a CPU overheating. We wanted to
isolate whether we had a bad CPU or a bad motherboard heat sensor.

Did the message say which CPU was 'overheating'? If yes, then swapping
may give some idea as to what is up.

I'd guess a sensor has failed, but I am not sure.

Can't you turn the overheat warning off in the BIOS? Seems to me on my
poweredge servers you can do this (but I'm not 100% sure!)
