More Information

I am a college student that lives off campus and I ride my bike to class. I also have a small budget and plan to buy a laptop that has decent specs and can last me the year. (I am not looking for graphics to play D3 or loads of space for mp3s as I have a desktop for that)

I came down to two options: HP zv5000z and Averatec 3200.
This is what they have in common:
512mb ram (not flexible)
dvd/cd-rw (flexible)
802.11g wireless (not flexible)
40gb hdd (flexible)

Now here are the differences:

Averatec
AMD XP-M 2000+
Dimensions: ~11" x 9.6"
battery life: 2.5-3 hrs
wieght: 4.2 lbs
Comes with "normal wear-and-tear only" warranty
This goes for $999.00 (and $4 shipping from newegg)

HP zv5000z
AMD 64 3000+
Dimensions: ~11" x 15"
Battery: 4.5 hrs (with nice 12 cell battery)
Wieght: 7.8 lbs
No warranty (but 1year full coverage for $99)
This goes for $1099 (includes $50 rebate and student :) discount) and no shipping, direct from HP

So I am sure you can see my problem. Pay $100 for superior performance and batt life, but bigger and heavier or $100 less for small yet adequate.

Of course any suggestions of other notebooks are welcome but please keep note of the price.
Edited by airwaffle on 08/15/04 12:55 PM.
