My son has a Dell Dim 3000 system.
He uses AOL.

He has a strange problem (probably OT, but...):

When he goes to a sight that requires a user ID and Password, the following
happens:

First time, no problem.
Any future attempts, it says page can't be found.

If he reboots, it again works once (sometimes twice).

Any ideas what is going on?? Is his first visit somehow changing some kind
of security settings? I don't know how to check for this. Also, it isn't
just one sight. It's a bunch of sites that do this.

Well, I thought I saw something about this on the Microsoft site, but now I
can't find it. Otherwise, all I can do is guess.

Is he typing the correct password and ID, making sure the CAPS lock isn't on
or vice versa.

Are these sites restricted in any way? You might check the list to see if
they show up, either from the browser, or AOL's parental control.

Perhaps enable cookies for the site, if you have that turned off. Maybe
popup blockers, try changing your internet security to a lower lever. I
don't have AOL so I can't go to the site, but you might give an example for
someone who can.

The rebooting part might mean something, since normally just shutting down
the browser will erase most things.

It really sounds like a problem with the IE cache.

First visit the page is not in the cache and loads (storing a copy) at the
same time. On the return visit, it's attempting to re-load the page from the
cache and failing. (something is blocking it - I.E. firewall). Make certain
any firewall is permitting access to 127.0.0.1.

Check this first: Tools, Internet Options, under "Temporary Internet Files"
click Settings, and (as an experiment), check "Every Visit to the Page". Now
visit and revisit a website. It now works, it's related to being unable to
access the Internet Explorer Cache. Probably a firewall interfering. To
test this, change the setting to "Automatically" and temporarily turn off
any firewall running. If it now loads on the second try, it was the
firewall. If not some other software is the problem.

If it worked when you forced it to load only WebPages, you could reset it to
that setting and it would allow browsing until you found the actual program
causing it. Also check "Delete all Offline Content" as well. (This will slow
down browsing as every page will load by download and not from it's stored
cache.

There is another solution, not really a good one, but with the setting at
auto, Tools, Internet Options, Delete files. This clears the cache and
forces the webpage to reload. Doing this would also prove it's a cache
problem.
- To clear the cache: Click Tools, click Internet Options, under Temporary
Internet Files click the Delete Files.
