HAs anyone changed the video card in this latop. I have and am having
problems with XP detecting card. anolog works, LCD remains blank.

Try reseating the lcd cable connection on the systemboard, and make sure the
earthwire is screwed down,
if the external monitor works fine then its not the video card

I have reseated the card/lcd cable a number of times but will try again,
won't hurt. Really strange that the OS doesn't recognize the card which is
why I believe it may be the card. The only other options are the mother
board or the OS. I am really stuck on this.

On dell support phone line, they have a message talking about blank
screens after installing XP patches. So maybe...I did install SP2 and
shortly after the screen started going crazy. most likely not..

What drove me to change the video card in the first place was due to the
fact that if the system was off for a long period of time, I would get
distortion on the lcd and the external on bootup. Sometimes I had vertical
lines across the lcd and the external. After a number of power cycle I
would finally get things working right until I moved the system a little or
turned it off for a long time. Once I changed the card, the vertical lines
and distortion from moving the base stopped happening but The lcd would
remain blank and the OS failed to recognize the video adaptor as a GeForce2
so the drivers would not be loaded, which is where I am now.

I may not be aware of steps that are required when replacing the video card.


Anyway, I Will have to check the "earthwire" idea, haven't read anything

You could also try the Fnc & F9 key to toggel between the lcd and the
monitor, the fact that its ok on an external suggests the card is ok, it is
possible that its the connector on the systemboard, but if toggleing it
doesn't make any difference then the chances are its more likely to be the
LCD panel or the flex cable. You have also installed the correct DELL
drivers and not just the XP ones?

I have tried the FN &F8 key combination to toggle between the ext and the
lcd. When I do this he ext goes blank as it should but lcd fails to become
active. I believe but am not sure that the video card has two separate
paths, one for the vga output and another for the lcd. Could be the
circuitry on the video card for the lcd defective. I am hoping anyway. I
have a replacement on the way and should be here in a couple of days.

In the meantime, it just does not make sense that the OS does not recognize
the card on bootup. When I try to use the hardware wizard and select the
correct hardware from the OS supplied list I cannot install the drivers. The
drivers are taken from the dell web site so I know I have the right one(s).
I am going to be
disappointed if the new card displays the same problem, that is why I
posted to get some other ideas based on facts. If the card is okay it seems
that the OS should be able to identify the card and load the drivers
regardless of the flex cable or LCD being the root cause of the problem.

Could be the connector on the mother board but then won't the ext be
affected or as well?

you are using the Dell drivers arn't you??? and you havn't wiped the hard
drive and reinstalled the o/s have you ?

Sure..downloaded version 4482 which is the latest driver for the Geforce2 GO
from Dell. In fact I have downloaded 4425 which is the previous version. I
have also verified I am using the correct driver for the version of Bios I
have. That may be another thing to try, install a older bios/driver to see
if the OS will be able to detemine the type of card.

Do no want to reload Window but I will attempt to perform restores
before I start replacing the motherboard, lcd etc...

The flex cable only cost 14 bucks so that may be the next step if the
replacement video card fails to correct the problem.

You seem to keep asking about the drivers. If the OS does not recognize the
card, drivers mean nothing. That is really what puzzles me, the fact that
the OS does not recogonize the card and therefore fails to load the
drivers. What would stop the OS from determining the type of card it is? The
orginal card is 4D527 and they sent me 1G544, wondering if this has
something to do with it.. The 1G544 is suppose to be compatable with the
8100 bWho knows, we will see when I get the new card.

Wish I didn't leave the old card at work. It will be interesting to see what
happens if I re-insert the old card...I will do this after work on monday.

Sometimes theres a function-key that needs to be pressed in order to
switch between DVI, analog, or both...usually fcn and an F-key. Maybe
Fcn-F6?

I was able to fix this problem by replacing the video card. If anyone tells
you that the blacklight or the lcd is the root cause for a blank lcd do not
believe them until you do your homework.
