Movies nowadays have lost their touch. While there have been movies such as Inception and The Kings Speech in recent years most movies nowadays feel like a marketing ploy. Before the 2000's we had a plethora of excellent, brilliant movies: The Godfather, Citizen Kane, Taxi Driver, Pulp Fiction, Night of the Living Dead, and so many more.
Bear in mind that I am 15 and I still fell this way despite many of my age group feeling "The Hangover was the best movie ever made"
I think part of the problem, is that there have been so many movies, it's hard to come up with an original idea now.
To a lesser degree, I think it's also about money. The masses seem to like the blockbuster type movies (Ironman, Avatar, Transformers, etc...). The production companies want to put out the movies that are going to make them the most money.
If a movie makes 200 million in the US it could make another 800 mil - 1 billion bucks over the world. So if the movie has a simpler plot and falls back on gags that will port well to other countries they make more money.
The more complex the plot and dialogue the less well it transfers into another language. So the movie industry has incentive to make simple action movies and comedies with slapstick humor that cross cultural boundaries.
I was driving back to my house from work last week and I heard an interesting premis on the radio:
There are only two movie plots.
"Coming of age" and
"Boy meets girl".

I think they are right.
i guess it pretty much boils down to that
if it isn't the main plot it is the sub plot.
