I'm looking at building a custom laptop I know the 580m is a bit better than the 6990m but it is much more expensive to put it in a sager. Is the price difference with it to get the 580m? I can get a pretty kick ass laptop with a 6990m for a little over 1600. While the 580m takes me to almost 1900. I'm sure out will come down to preference but how different are these cards in terms of gaming performance?

In terms of gaming performance they are pretty close.
And certainly not $300 worth of extra performance for the 580M

Well the 6990 is a "Dual GPU Card" in the desktop field, i don't know how they integrated that but ah the 6990m i'd imagine is way more powerful than the 580m. However keep in mind the key word is Power. more horsepower could also mean more power usage=shorter battery life. SO.....
Algorithm> Better GPU horse power= Better Performance>Shorter Battery life OR
GTX 580m> Enough Performance> Longer Battery life

Its up to you, if you want the best performance and want to save money, Nothing wrong at all with the 6990m. AMD has been know for decreasing its power usage in its technology

For comparison I added a couple desktop GPUs: GTX 560ti and Radeon HD 6870

the 6990m is a single gpu card even though its desktop brother is a dual gpu card. i would make my decision solely based on the benchmarks provided by WR2. which looks like the 580m takes the cake... NVIDIA FTW!!!

Thanks both of you!!! the 6990 uses a bit less but is about 5% weaker than the 580m the 6990 is on sale for $145 upgrade where as the 580m is 475 I definitely would go with the 6990 for price. 1600 dollar notebook with 6990, i think yes.

I wonder if they're getting ready to switch over to the 7xxx series GPUs?
