Use the accelerometer in a laptop

Forum Laptops & Notebooks : General Discussion Use the accelerometer in a laptop

I have a Toshiba P505 laptop I am preparing to convert to a tablet PC... and I would like to access the accelerometer built into it (by default all it does is stop the HDD when it senses a drop, I think) to rotate the screen.

Does anyone know if this is even possible? If not with the built-in accelerometer, is there any aftermarket options I could look into?
