Hi,

My Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop has no output to it's screen or very
little. Sometimes it shows up as reddish, and on the dark side, but then
just goes away. It drives an external monitor just fine. Everything else
is fine, it runs fine.

What does this sound like? One technician seems to want to replace the
mother board. Does this make sense? Should anything else be replaced
first? What about the screen itself??

If its ok on an external monitor then the problem lies with the LCD panel
could be the backlight, try reseating cables if no good then replace the
LCD definatly NOT the motherboard

Wow. Thanks for the quick reply. I'll check the connections in a bit. It's
going through a defrag now and is taking a while. Is there a test for the LCD
that can be done??

What's a typical cost for the LCD? Ballpark.

It would be the back light, you can find lcd's for the I8K out on ebay used
for about $130 for the screen. Keep in mind that the I8K 15 inch screen
came from serveral manufacturers (IBM, Samsung, Hitachi, etc.) if you get
one different than the one you are replacing you will need to get an lcd
inverter to go with the lcd screen you buy. i.e. the inverter with the
Hitachi screen will not work with the IBM screen.

The backlight is a thin CCFL lamp that is inside the display.

Rather than chance a used LCD panel of unknown quality and origin, most
LCD repair specialists can replace an LCD bulb for about $100-150.

The part is cheap ($30 or so) but the replacement procedure is delicate
and usually requires soldering.

Typically there is a light(bulb) behind the lcd panel, separate from
the panel itself. Sounds like the light needs replacing, or it
*could* be as simple as needing to reseat all connections between the
mobo, panel and/or backlight - sometimes over time corrosion can cause
connection problems.

I replaced my i5000's lid due to badly cracked hinges ... removing the
trim pieces, inverter/cable and panel, etc, was like working on an
intricate puzzle requiring patience and the right tools (ie, tiny
drivers). But anyway, since there are so many panel options you need
to make sure you get the correct part for your config. Personally, I
would only deal directly with the mfgr on such an item (however they
might forward you to a 3rd party). Dell has the contact info and
basic repair info online at support.dell.com .

When I last dealt with them, this was their contact info - not sure if

Ok. I reseated the connectors and the screen is still dark. If I reseat
the connector closest to the motherboard, the screen flashes red and then
goes dark.

I can't say that I saw the "back light".

What should I do? What should I replace? As I understand it there are 3
components; the cable, the back light, and the LCD.

I don't mind taking a bit ofd a risk when I replace the components but
what makes the most sense?

It's Hitachi by the way.

Hi,
I just replaced the backlight on a pair of Hitachi screens. Not for the
faint of heart.
One works fine, and the other doesnt, so YMMV.
You will need to purchase a replacement backlight, and then take the
seperate panels out of the frame (after taking the whole LCD panel out of
its frame.
Then you unsolder the old backlight CCFL tube, and solder the new one in
place. Then reassemble them all together, making sure that every panel lines
up correctly. Then when you put the copper tape back on, you need to make
sure that there is a good ground (that is where I think I messed up the one
that doesnt work - poor ground, but not sure...)
