ATI 5650M or Geforce 425M and which gives off less heat

According to some reviews, the two cards are almost equal however if you look at this webpage, you will see that the 5650M comes in at 52nd where as the 425M is down at 60th. Compare the two on the page and judge them yourself.

I am unsure about notebook cooling; check the computer not the card but I have typically found that Radeon cards are more efficient and compact (thus better cooling) than the nVidea equivilent.

+1. Agreed. Generally, ATIs run cooler than their Nvidia "equivalents".

5650 is better, but gt425 provides better standby times, go with 5650
