What type of printer? Most inkjet printers have a setting to use only the black cartridge.

you cant. you must have all ink cartridges installed for the printer to function. but as said above, you can select in the driver to use black only/.

every printer has option to select black or color print. Just select your option. Also some printer print even without color cartridges. Just test it. My HP prints without color cartridges but my brother printer doesn't !

Maybe on some, but on HP printers gray scale will still use the color if you do not choose to use black ink only.

yeah, HP and lexmark can make a black color with color cartridge :lol:

Actually, all do in order to provide more shades a gray, but do you remember the old HP 500 series inkjets that only only had a three color cartridge, and no black?
