Hi, I'm pretty much a brand new PC gamer (console convert) and I need some help picking a decent keyboard. I don't have a type of game I play often, so I'm not sure if I need a mad amount of macros or not. I will need backlighting because I will mostly likely be playing later at night. I picked up a decent mouse so I don't need that or a combo thing. I also don't want to spend tons of money as I just bought my new PC. Also I'm in Canada. If someone could give me advice to pick one, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Visit some of your local computer stores. Most stores have a gaming section where you will find complete setups. Also, the staff in these areas are usually avid gamers. They will have suggestions and demos. Try some of the keyboards on display. There is nothing like using a keyboard to get a feel for what features you like and what features you don't like. Read some product reviews too.

Based on this, buy the one of your choice.

a word of note: gaming in total darkness with a lit lcd isn't exactly great for your eyes. it is recommended to have at least a small lamp on to provide ambient light. with said lamp, backlit keys aren't required.

if you decide to go without backlit keys: logitech makes some nice general use keyboards. if you want a more solid keyboard you might want to look into a DAS or Unicomp "clicky" keyboard as they are heavy and work well for gaming. I'd avoid gimmicky keyboards like the cyborg, and other such fancy ones as all the extras aren't required but that is up to you.

if you really do want a backlit keyboad: i think the razer keyboard is backlit but it might have a rubberized coating which you may/may not like. i have their mouse and it works good so i'd figure the keyboard should be the same.

as an avid gamer i can tell you that you really don't need macros or quickkeys to play. what matters most is the weight of the keyboard, a tactile feel that you prefer (and key-press resistance), as well as what is comfortable for you to use.
