There is no disk in my D:\ but the light is permanently on and the slot will not open. It causes the system to freeze up for 30 secs to a min every time it decides to try and see what is in that drive.......driving me nutso!!!

I don't think you mean it's a diskette drive, those are almost always labeled as A: D: is probably your CD/DVD drive. There should be a small hole on the front bezel, using a paperclip or something similar, poke it in the hole, you will feel the tray release, you can check what's in there. If nothing, and the PC continues to do what it's doing, get a new drive.
