brought a new memory card for my sony , took loads of pictures on holiday , now trying to get them off card onto lappy but it says card needs formatting and if i do this i will lose all pictures , so are they stuck on card or is there some way to get them off?

It's happens a lot, don't worry, formatting won't erase pictures. It's only the system marks it as free space.
So, Firstly, please make sure you do not take or save more photos on the medium in case it overwrites your original ones.
Then you can use a powerful photo recovery software: http://www.recovery-programs.com/recover-photos.html You can follow up on the menus to use it to recover your photos.
