The zoom has stopped working on my camera,its been fine up until now.Ive noticed that when its switched on and I hold it to my ear I can hear faint whirring sounds.

What you are hearing is not good news. It means that the zoom drive mechanism has failed. These mechanisms are made from fragile molded plastic parts to keep the weight down.
