I just got an Dell Optiplex 620 , and since i got it all it brought me was trouble
, i guest that's why i got such a bargain .
WD Caviar SE SATA HD 7200 RPM X2
512 MB PC Samsung memory X 4
3.8GHzPentium 4 HT Processor
This Machine has a total of 8 USB ports (2 in front)
Ethernet adapter , Graphic card sound card on-board.
It had windows XP pro installed and running normally but i couldn't get the computer to recognize my USB keyboard nor my Mouse, i cannot do any configuration in the bios because it doesn't have any PS\2 ports , so i use a serial Mouse and i connected it to my Network trying to install the needed drivers and when i restart the computer the serial mouse stop working , i tried to shut it that by pressing the power button (not holding it until it shuts off ) and while the windows was shutting down i got this blue screen witch i'm sure some of you have experience .

.
I could of gone to safe mode and try to fix it but any USB keyboard i use seem to work
. I ask any off you have experience something like that to please help me . thank you.
I have had alot of gx620's in the past and very few problems...
What kind of keyboard do you have? where are you plugging in? I don't know if in actuality it matters... but I usually plug in the same way I would a ps2 keyboard. I plug the keyboard in the top left most usb slot, and the mouse in the one next to it.
plug the keyboard in, power on and just keep pressing F2.
other troubleshooting steps you may want to take : Remove all but 1 ram stick ( leave the stick that is closest to the cpu )
I've literally had dozens of gx620's, gx520's and I don't think I've ever had a usb issue.

Thanx for the reply, I fix the blue screen problem but the mouse and Keyboard still doesn't work, I'm using and HP multimedia keyboard , and a dell optical mouse. I tried a dell keyboard and an other mouse in all the 8 different USB ports and they did not work, the light of the mouse turn's on normally when i plug t in and that about all it does , all i have to rely on is an old Serial mouse, I'll try what you told me and let you know how it went
Check the BIOS to make sure you have USB keyboard and mouse enabled.
Common men didn't you read what i wrote i the upper paragraph ? i cant get into the bios because the USB keyboard wont work and it does have any PS/2 ports.
Try a different USB keyboard. Without PS2 ports, USB would be enabled by default.
| aford10 wrote : Try a different USB keyboard. Without PS2 ports, USB would be enabled by default. |
I tried that , and the keyboard is brand new , it work fine on my other PC
Sounds like you need to do a windows repair or fresh install.
Have you tryed pulling the cmos battery and or resetting the cmos ?
a clean install will do the trick!
How can i reinstall the windows if i can even use the Keyboard to make the required setting , like boot from CD ROM or so , you guy know to well when you are booting from CD ROM it requires that you press a key from the keyboard
maybe you should try getting a pci - sata card, or a pci - ps2 card to see if that lets you use ur keyboard.
I was thinking about doing it but i didn't want to get one and for it not to work , i think ill do that and let you guys no how if it work or not
Hi. I have the same problem with the same model, however, my gx620 can't even past the post seccion, after the dell's initial screen it says there is a keyboard error and stops there. Since usb doesn't works, can't press F1 to continue neither F2 to go to bios.
Did you solved your problem?
plug the keyboard in the front usb before booting
| area51reopened wrote : plug the keyboard in the front usb before booting |
I did, it was the same as in the back doors, no keyboard detected, no bios acess, no boot, no nothing, it just stays there waiting for a keyboard input (f1 to move on, ignoring the errors and F2 to enter the bios). It doesn't even gets to the part where dispalys the amount of ram...
This reminds me...
Since I didn't had ddr2 to put in it, I got some from a friend, kingston ddr2 kvrXXXXX something. In the kingstons memory search page, dell's gx620 recommended ram is some KTDXXXX modules.
Might it be that inadequated ram may lead to post errors? Or should it give error right in the start, before any screen, like when there is no memory installed?
And the keyboards (2 of them) I tried (one corded, other wireless) are not original dell. Wireless one is microsoft wireless desktop keyboard 1000 and the other is some rubbish white brand.
Might this be a problem? Not all keyboards are born equal, but it's just a keyboard...

this should be a new thread...!
Yes, it should, but as the author of this one had the same symptoms I did, and the thread is nearly one year old, I would like to know how It did turnout to him...
And since the last post was about 7 or 8 months old, I hardly can be acused of hijack someones else thread, after all, it was abandoned.
The problem is most likely because you're using a USB keyboard, not PS2. Try using a PS2 keyboard, and tap the delete key on startup to access the BIOS. Once there, look for the USB mouse/keyboard settings, and enable them. That will solve the non-responsive keyboard in the POST sequence.
Now, to your original issue. While still in the BIOS, look for the 'halt on errors' settings. Change that setting from keyboard to no errors. That way, if it's not detecting your keyboard in the POST sequence, it'll continue on to windows.
Thanks for the replying.
The dell gx620 has no ps/2 connctors, otherwise I would have already tried them...
There are only USB's.
And because of that I can't go into bios and do what you said - thats why I would like some input from the original treader, to know how/if he solved yhe problem...
And from what I understood from this model manual, the default settings for usb keyboard and mouse is on... so thats probably not the problem. I guess it's realy something to hardware level, like burnt logic or whatever...
USB is great, until it stops working or giving headaches like bad connections, drives and inputs going randomly down, etc...
This sucks
Try resetting the BIOS, by removing the CMOS battery for ~5 minutes.
The thread was from almost a year ago, the OP may not be around anymore. He hasn't posted since May.
I did removed the battery and cleared cmos (actualy its labeled as som rtc_clr or something), altought not for five minutes.
Anyway, only after new year I will be able to test it, I'm out for the holidays and wont take the hardware with me.
Then I will try that, thanks.
Have a Happy Holidays!
You're welcome. Merry Christmas!

I haven't reply to this treat because i haven't receive any relevant suggestions , i did buy a USB pci card it works after windows starts and not before so i cant make any changes to the bios if i wanted to.
OK so let me get this straight.
windows works but you have no USB ports so your mouse and keyboard will not work and you can't even get into the BIOS, correct.?
please fill me in if I am missing something..

Thats what happened to me, only with me it was worse:
Since there is no working usb, bios doesn't detects keyboard and because of that, the boot hangs in the keyboard error. Can't go to Bios to remove the keyboard error halt.
So, I dont even get to disk/windows... just get stuck in post where it says to push F2 (or is it F12, can't remenber right...) to go into BIOS, but... I can't, there is no keyboard detected...
It's simply a dead end. I think I'm going to ditch the dell and just put toghether a cheap system. Only regret I can't even reuse the dell desktop case, I kind off like it, but it's for BTX boards and more pain than it's worth it to make compatible with mATX.
Thank you all.

I wish i could be of help men. My did the same thing said something about " booting from floppy disk drive failure " and i didn't have a floppy installed so i plug one in and it started normally because the drive "C:" was the second booting device after the floppy, your bios setting might be difrent so i don't know if it will work for you. ( by the way , I just use mine as a home sever i back up all my data and file on it )

All correct, except for the windows part. My pc doesn't even get to hard drive/windows, just stops in the boot part where I should/but can't go into bios. Just sits there waiting for keyboard input, which is impossible (no usb's) and doesn't moves forward because it seems that the settings in bios are for the boot to stop when it finds some kind of error (no keyboard detected is one of them...).
So, no windows, no bios, no keyboard, no nothing, just boot screen... it's a vivious circle... well, kind of... actualy seems more like a dead end!

Mine said the same thing, gave a floppy error. I then attached a floppy and the error was gone. Then it gave me a hdd error. I connected a ide hdd and solve that one too. Only the cursed keyboard error can't be removed, since the board can't detect the usb keyboard and there are no ps/2.
Who was the genious that thought that it was time and a good idea to remove ps/2 connectors from motherboards?
Hey guys. I think something like this would be your only option.

NICE...
I do not remember the GX620 motherboard from memory that well.
isn't there a motherboard / BIOS reset jumper.?
it seems that removing the CMOS battery didn't work.
| malmental wrote : I do not remember the GX620 motherboard from memory that well.

The manual states a clock reset jumper, not bios reset jumper...
thanx..

Unfortunately, that won't work, because the dell gx620 doesn't posesses standard connectors, they have smaller and closer pins than standard connectors (those are like hdd ide or floppy pins ).
Theres a ser2 connector which as a serial port and a ps/2 port on those pins but I can't find the pinout diagram anywhere. If I could, I would try to connect to a cable similar to that one you refered that I have somewhere and would give it a shot...
I know there's a dell cable that connects to this ser2 and add's a ps/2 plug in the back of the box, but even in ebay those are a little expensive, not to mention it may not solve the problem or even create a new one.
I think the best is to get a new cheap mobo and reuse all the other stuff and a old atx case I have around...
LEOPINTO , I think i figured out what was causing the problem , it seems that on of the chipset on my Mother board is friend rendering the USB port un-operational , you should check yours to see if there isn’t anything burnt on your mother board. If it's the case for you as well , just get an other Mobo
Are you talking about the main chipset or some smaller one?
I see one chipset labeled nh82801gb and another one wich is unindentified but as a heatsink on top. Then there are other smaller chips, one is broadcom, other smsc...
However, I just gave the board a look and can't see anything burnt, everything seems to be ok.Do you have some more info?
Thanks anyway.
| leopinto wrote : Are you talking about the main chipset or some smaller one?

I'm not sure but it has , it's the one that right on top of the battery , It has Intel written on it ,something to do with the USB ports. It does doesn't look burn but i had to look very closely to find that out .
I would also check all capacitors on the motherboard... Dell amongst other companies had major problems with leaking caps a few years ago (The Optiplex GX620 was one of the affected machines).
Signs of bad caps include bulging, fluid or corrosion around the base of the cap (on the motherboard itself), Brown or yellow "goo" on top of the cap... Leaking capacitors also have a distinct smell (similar to cat's p*ss in my opinion).
It was one of the first things I searched for, but everthing seems ok.
The board is very cleen and the capacitors look like to be perfectly well, which, of course, doesn't mean they are...
Try another keyboard, and another, and another...
I have 2 620's and they are picky about keyboards at the BIOS level that work fine once XP is booted.
