I recently got the very fine Samsung Galaxy S II. What I know from wikipedia is that this seems to be the US version (shipped with 2.3.4) although it has many European languages in it. Anyway, I also learned that the latest version is 2.3.6 that should be available for the S II. But neither through Kies nor through the Software Update (both in the std user UI and via the secred code) can the phone find any updates. Why the frack?

You will be fine. Just wait until you have update on Ice cream sandwich. When it is available, copy and paste on system root and boot into bootloader to update OS.
