now that ipad doesn´t need for a pc to work and it´s no more a peripheral, is it a good idea to have just an ipad for home use?

Bad idea. Ipad cannot be used for a lot of things. Word editing, full HD, flash, just to name a few which ipad cannot do or would be really painful to do on. It just doesn't offer the number of software and function of a computer on a window or linux or even the apple operation system.
