Hello folks.

How would you rank the "best" brands of RAM for reliability? for non-overclocked stability? for non-overclocked performance?

Anything like this?...

1) Mushkin
2) Corsair
3) Crucial / Micron
4) Kingston
5) Samsung

Thanks much!

You've listed all good names when it comes to memory chips. The fact that you're interest in non-overclocked stability and performance means you should get the cheapest one of the bunch.

Ummm... Look further and you'll see that Geil RAM has latency settings of 2-6-3-3-T2. Corsair RAM at the same speed has latency of 2-2-2-5-T1. Corsair also has the respect of almost everyone and a lifetime warranty.

1. Corsair
2. Mushkin
3. Crucial

I think this are the top memory brands. The others are about the same.

3-2-4-5-2-3-4 or 3-2-1-4-2-3-2 who the hell cares, i have tested both on the same system (not seperate identical ones) and in 3D Mark I average 5-8fps better on Geil with identical settings.

I used the 512MB PC3200 ULD DDR Dual Channel DDR Kit ($155)
vs. the Corsair XMS3200 512(256*2)MB DDR Non-ECC Low Latency ($200)

As for the lifetime warrenty I must Laugh out Loud, who may I ask is going to use the same RAM for more than even a couple years considering that the people that purchase this type of RAM aren't exactly looking for a long range machine they are the ones who upgrade often.

Hey man.. .quality over quantity... that warranty shows they stand behind their products and that it's reliable... as for upgrades.... there will always be uses for old systems so don't underestimate them...

Maybe Geil performed better at the same settings but with crucial you could put more agressive settings and gain performance...

Just an experience, but we had a power problem here and it blew out my two sticks of Corsair 2400 Cas2 256Meg, and I got the RMA and returned them to Corsair and they sent NEW replacements to me in a week and half. I had paid only $32 apiece for them, but at that time, the replacement cost would have been over $150. I stand by Corsair and Crucial from personal experience. The time difference was only about 6 months from purchase to having them blown out.
Hope this helps someone,

If OC the RAM is the goal, e.g. Rated = 1600 MHz 8-8-8-24-2N and you're looking to run them 1800 MHz 8-8-8-24-2N {frequency} or 1600 MHz 7-7-7-24-2N {CAS}.

1) Corsair {Dominator, and some Vengeance}
2) Mushkin {Enhanced, Ridgeback, Redline, & Radioactive}
3) Kingston {T1, H2O}

Won't OC:
4) Crucial / Micron
5) Samsung

Anyone notice that oxy_ahbi revived a thread that dated back to 2003???

I like the mention of PC3200 RAM (which was pretty darn fast back then!). Now we talk of 1600MHz, but that corresponds to PC12800 :)  And the talk of 512MB of RAM - can you imagine installing so little in a PC today?

No I can't Imagine 512MB of RAM, Well actually I can since I just tore out some RAM in my torrent machine and installed 2 old 256MB modules. It was slugish even with a 3GB page file and had not much resource overhead. But then I remember my 1st XP maching I had in 2002 just after XP came out and it had a total of a whopping 128MB of RAM and after booting it was using about 105MB of it with not much left then realized that M$ put the minimum requirements for XP as 64MB so I set out to see if I could get it to run on just 64MB. I only could after tunring off a million things running in the background (something normal pc users would not know how to do) and maybe not taking it on the net and using it as a word processor only.

Course it is all realative to how you set up a maching and what you use it for. I remember building another XP machine in 2007 with 1GB of RAM and it was great. Upgraded to 2GB and was wonderful till SP2 came out. Still more resources than 1GB on SP1 but when SP3 came out it was the same as running 1GB on SP1 and when M$ comes out with SP updates that come with more services running in the background you need to add more RAM.

To answer the original question for 2012, I havn't done any testing but I think it depends a little on the machine build. The tech guys I iknow seam to reserve OCZ for Intel builds becuase of it being finicy with voltages but in general like:
(in general RAM of what you see in most stores)
1. Corsair
2. Kingston
3. Cruicial
4 Samsung

Actually bought that much 2nd hand DDR2 to suppliment the 256MB that was in an old laptop to be used as an internet browser. They all thought I was mad "Flogging a dead horse". After removing absolutley everything that didn't need to be there and a bit of RAM looks like I've got a zombie horse plodding the internet quite happily.

For non OC I would say corsair value. Corsair Vengeance if you want it to look cool and or OC. Corsair Dominator Platinum if you hate money.

Most of these posts here seems to be posted by teenagers with not much experience (mid 30s here, hacking since 10 yrs old, old school).

I am baffled by the people recommending Crucial??? Crucial is a 'value' brand of Micron (just like Lexar). If you're gonna go Micron - go 'actual' Micron, the high end series.

Also, Transcend, Samsung, Hynix are just low-end garbage, good for a netbook, but not Alienware rig (my rig).

From a very extensive research I've done on the web (2013), looking only at high-end chips/series within manufactures lines) this is the consensus:

No.1 - G.Skill.. nothing comes close to quality, but the price is usually double of the Corsairs and even Mushins
No.2 - Mushkin... second best, close to quality of G-skill, but not quite there.
No.3 - Corsair ... close third, but still worse than 1 & 2

OCZ had great RAM too, but they switched to SSDs

the rest is average

I'd have to say GSkill, best selling brand out there, LifeTime Guarantee, and they are the innovators that all others are following right down to the timings - good example they had a few sets of 2400 over a year ago, everybody else is playing catchup.......I used to use Mushkin, Corsair, and Kingston, changed to Gskill as my primary about 4 years ago and never looked back.

and not only for spec and stability, but also for OCing:

I love how this thread is from 2003, but is still relevant, I came here because I was looking to upgrade my dell d430 but it has max ram of 2gig, so I thought better brand might help
