I know most CDRs will play in CD players, but will DVD-Rs play in a DVD like normal? I'm guessing not

They should, assuming you have set up your dvd-r like a commercial dvd movie disk.
Though compatability depends on your drive... there are alot of formats out there.

I believe nero has a driveinfo tool that lets you detect what types of media your drive can read.
