I was wondering if DVD writers like this...

would allow you to copy DVD movies? I understand a little about how DVD movie discs have two sides, but is the data for the movie spread out over the two of them?

Yes a Pioneer burner will allow you to burn movies. It is more difficult than just copying a cd, though, because of the copy protection. Browse around <A HREF="http://doom9.org" target="_new">http://doom9.org</A> for some information on how to do this.
