Hello Guys,

I am an old C band DX'er and new to Mpeg FTA DVB.

I'm looking for inexpensive, small physical size solutions, to decode the AC-3
digital audio output from the Pansat 2700A. (S/PDIF)

I would find, most satisfactory, a limited solution of one Left and one Right
analog output (instead of 5.1) for monitoring PBS, etc. ( News, Commentary, and
Std Pgms)

I really do not want to purchase a lg receiver to haul around in my forested
area while testing and adjusting and ID'ing birds w/ my Ku hobby dishes!

Do any suitable modules exist that can be built into a "black" box?

Any and all constructive comments are appreciated.

I have the same problem. I asked here some time ago and was told that the
best bet might be a low price (< $100) home theater system from, say,
Wal-Mart. I haven't got around to looking yet and will be most interested
in any replies you get. I do remember finding a circuit of a board which
could do this via Google but have lost the address it seems. I couldn't be
bothered to try and make one anyway but it is there somewhere and I'll try
and find it again and I'll let you know.

Hi Alan,

Dubious of the prospects, I followed one of your ideas the other day w/o
success...I visited my Super Walmart and asked to see the HT-395, 100 W
stereo for ~ $50. (mentioned on Mpeg 2 dvb threads)

While Walmart traced on the computer, I checked their stock and neither of
us could find evidence of that model. We did find a Chinese line of
"complete" systems using HT numbers on their models...some boxes indicated
that the contents could do digital surround audio??? Prices started at $39.
No Chinese models were on display and all their boxes were sealed.
I didn't think the prospects were good, and did not want a "system" anyway,
so, I did not ask to open any boxes!

Back to square one!

You will need to verify what type of digital audio connectors are on these
units, the web site does not give specifics.

Ed,

S/Pdif is just a digital signal. You need a DAC (Digital Analog
Converter) to get the audio out of it.

I have not been active lately, but I have been a Ham Radio Operator since
1958. My callsign is K5HR.

You did mention building modules into a "black box" and that you would be
satisfied with only 2-channel Left/Right stereo.

I have the 2700A as well; went to an online auction site, bought
a stand alone Dolby Digital Decoder. Coaxial out from the receiver to
the input coaxial on the DDD. Output the two font speaker
connections on the DDD to your tv audio inputs. That's about
as small and simple as i've found if you don't want a receiver
inbetween. The decoder units i've found are about 6 inches wider
than the pansat, same depth/height. So, i don't know of any
small black box, and like you, i searched the web endlessly
for a week (ok, there were some $1000 plus boxes for DDD,
but i'm not THAT interested in the sound). I paid $70.

And by the way,
if the decoder you purchase is a few years old, like mine,
don't use the AC3 coaxial terminal !!! They made that connection
for LaserDiscs, i think. It should also have one or two simple
"coaxial in" terminals. Use one of these.

(and that should have read "output the two FRONT speakers...."

I've been looking for a solution to digital audio problem myself and i'm
glad I ran across your post to point me in the right direction. I looked
on ebay and found the Midiland ADS-2000. I bought it for $49.95 used. I
dont know if thats a good deal or not but I couldnt find them anywhere
else on the net and the 4000 model is about $130. I just got it today,
hooked it up to my pansat 2700a and it worked great. This was the exact
thing I was looking for. I guess I could have bought a complete speaker
system for a little more but I dont need all the extras. If you can find
one of these boxes for cheap I highly recommend one.
