Has this been tried!
In radio astronomy many dishes are grouped together electronically to
create in essence 1 big dish.
It would be interesting to hear from anyone who has tried this .
It would make good use of all those surplus small dishes.A little bit of
hardware and know how.
I smell a project !

I'm not claiming any special expertise in this area, but it seems to me that
some of the challenges to this approach is that radio astronomy is involved
with trying to detect extremely weak analog signals, but MPEG-DVB signals
are some of the strongest digital signals available from satellites. Even
with a sub-1 meter dish, the FEC codes ensure an error-free data stream.

What do you expect an array of small dishes to do that a single small dish
doesn't do?

They do this on the latest inmotion trackers I saw at the last CES
show.
Like 6 or 8 vertical blind looking things about 6" wide. Very neat,
$2400 or so.

Not so easy as it sounds. Problem is that each dish will have a different
phase shift of the received signal. Also, each LNB will have its own local
oscillator. I think the synchronization issues make this project too hard.

The above project, or another project just like it (not sure), started
out using surplus BUDs.

The phasing issue is not too difficult to overcome.

It's been tried before. The reward was not worth the struggle for the
slight improvement in reception (i.e., signal phasing problems, etc.).
