I have finally got my system up and running! I'll post the latest pictures a
little later.
When adjusting the dish I used the manual tracking to move it back and forth
and finally got it to track on all the satellites. The later I found out
that my receiver has 24 pre-programmed satellites in it. When I select one
of the pre-programmed sats it tracks to it but it's off by just a bit and
the fine tuning is just not enough to bring it in. Should I adjust the dish
to match the pre-programmed positions or is there a way to change the
location of the pre-programmed sats?

This system was up and running perfectly just 12 miles from my location
before I became the owner. Could 12 miles (East of me) make this much
difference? (That fine tuning can't correct)

What receiver do you have?

Hey Ben,
Refresh my memory as to which reciever you have, then I can look up the
manual on line and give you advice.

Back when some analog satellite recievers were manufactured they put a rom
chip in that had the satellites listed. As satellites came and went, the
list bacame out of date. So people would use a now non existent satellite
name to substitute as a now new unnamed satellite. This can be confusing,
but can be gotten used to. Some of the higher end recievers they made
replacement chips for to keep the satellite list up tp date, butit has some
time since I heard of anyone selling these.

Isn't this hobby great?

Thanks, That's a good link.
I'm still not sure how I know what satellite I'm looking at. I select a
satellite from the list and the dish moves there. Then I tune in a channel,
but I can't fine an info button or any way to see what the actual satellite
I'm looking at is. If my alignment is off it might not be receiving what it
says it is. If you know what I mean.

From what I understood in geography class in elementary school, I remember that
if you go about 15 miles in one direction, say longtitudal, that would make you
1 degree over as far as longitudal degrees. I'm not a sailor or pilot, but I do
remember something like that. 1 degree off on the angle of the dish would
probably throw you off track of the arc that you would lose satellite signals.
It's quite possible. Find out your present latitude by calling the control
tower of the nearest airport and they should be able to tell you where you are
at or use GPS.

Hi,

I'm interested in the picture above your caption "Here's my LNB and my
Feedhorn". The one on the right. How did you get the cable up to the LNBs?
Is it slid between the feedhorn rim and the black plastic it attaches to, or
did you cut a hole in the black plastic to let it through?

Also, do you plan to put any kind of outlet where the cable enters your
home, or just leave it as shown?

One more--what about "grounding" your antenna? And the cable grounding?

Hi Greg,
The cable at the feedhorn is indeed squished between the feedhorn rim and
the plastic ring the cone attaches too. It kind of bows the plastic up at
that point but that's how they had it when I picked up the unit and I could
see no other way.

I mounted a drywall box (plastic) in my living room where the cable comes
out. I had to cut a big hole in the back of it for the cable to fit through
and I'm now looking for some kind of appropriate plate to put on the front.

You have to look in Lyngsat
http://lyngsat.com/america.shtml
look for an analog channel in the clear, once you can identify it you know
which satellite you are looking at.

It used to be much easier before channels started going digital.

You see what channels are there and compare at lyngsat.

And his other question was:

IS the dish grounded?

Do you have a ground block where the cable enters the house(some use
them,some don't)?

MY question:

Does the feedhorn have a cover?
Does it also have a throat cover?

the former protects against inclement weather, the latter keeps those
wasps,n' spiders out which mess up your signal!
