I have picked what I consider the spot with the greatest amount of southern
view to place my post.

I live in the Los Angeles area and from the spot I selected I have full view
of the southern sky from 90 degrees to 195 degrees. Is this ok?

Here is a link to a page with my first two pictures. I'm going to keep a
photo log of the step by step setup and blunders.

OK, I copied the link into Media Player URL line and it worked fine. Very
nice little movie. I see that I need to make my hole a little larger now.

By the way Scram, do you know of a site where I can input my
Latitude: 34.032383
Longitude: 119.1343
and it will tell me the magnetic direction of each satellite from this
point? I would like to stand out back with my cumpass and figure out what
satellites I'll be able to get.

Enter your position as above and it will tell you the azimuth relative to
true north, the azimuth relative to magnetic north, the dish elevation
required and other data. There are two calculators on the site: one for GPS
positioning and the one you want. You can download the calculator to use
off-line.
