I turned my DirecTivo on yesterday at about noon and it was
showing a "retrieving information from satellite" message
with the progress bar sitting at 97%. I let it sit there
for 5 or 10 minutes and nothing changed, so I cycled the
power. When it came up, I got the usual "Powering up"
on the gray background, but then the next message "Almost
there, wait a few minutes" screen was different - it had
a big DirecTV logo on a black background with the message
below in white. The
last time I rebooted my DirecTiVo, this screen was the
old dark grey background with white text in the middle.
Then it went through an "Acquiring information from the
satellite" sequence that completed normally. Since then it
is behaving as usual.

Is the new startup screen part of the system upgrade that
happened a few months back? And why would it be hung on
getting satellite data at noon? Was this a failed call
from early the same morning?

I don't think 5-10 minutes is 'hung'. People seem to think TiVos are some
kind of super computer, when really they're more like a 386/33 with a meg
of memory. (Not literally, of course). If more people kept this in mind,
they would stop deciding the box is 'obviously' locked up and let the
bloody thing complete its work.

But why would it be doing this at noon? It normally does its
updates in the early morning hours.

A DirecTV DVR will "retrieve information from satellite" as part of the
power on sequence. That event will occur any time the DVR is powered on.
A power on sequence is normally complete in less than 5 minutes.

Note that power off and standby are different states.
