Sorry if these are commonplace all, but I'm hoping you all will bear with me
:-)

I'd like to do a couple of things

1). I'd like it to record every Columbo episode it comes across (because
they come on multiple channels, irregularly in some cases).

I've set up a Wishlist with "Columbo" as the keyword (since not all of them
necessarily have Columbo in the title IIRC). So far so good, it seems to be
catching them and recording them.

Now, in the recording options, what do I put to avoid getting too many
duplicates? Since this is not a new show, "First Run" doesn't make sense to
me - but is it first run for that episode, that show, that channel, etc.???

I understand if I watch one, or delete it, it won't record it again for 28
days. But what if it already recorded "Prescription Murder" on Hallmark, and
then it comes on Bio a couple of days later?

2). I'd like it to record a couple of episodes of, say, The Rockford Files,
which comes on a couple times a day. I don't really care which episodes I
get, I'd lust like to have a couple of them in case there's "nothing else
on" (or I want something that's an hour with commercials that I can watch in
45 minutes, rather than a 1.5 hour movie). Can I set it to record 2, and
then it will keep those until I delete one/both, and then it will just
record the next available ones that come up?

I tried to set up a SP for this, but it shows all of the episodes in the
upcoming list, and they all say they'll be recorded, even though keep at
most is set to 2, and I selected "until I delete".

3). New shows like Battlestar Galactica have a weekly new episode, which
gets shown again a couple of times during the week. I only want one (but I
want to record a couple in case I can't watch one until a week or two
later - unlikely, but I have a busy schedule), and it I got it set for 5
epi, first run and repeats (but I don't want any old shows). But, if I don't
watch or delete the one recorded on Friday at 10 till a couple of days
later, it's going to record the same episode if they're replayed because of
the 28 day thing (which is not in effect because I haven't watched or
deleted it) right? What if I set it to First Run only?

I think part of my problem is as I mentioned above, what exactly First Run,
and Repeat means to TiVo. I don't consider Gilligan's Island to be "first
run" - they're all repeats to me. But I also consider all of the replays of
BSG during the week to be "repeats". Does TiVo?

Thanks for any assistance,

Steve

Yup, wishlist

Make sure (if you want more than 5 episodes) you set "Keep at Most" to "All"
so it doesn't delete the first ep recorded to record ep 6.

First run and Repeats is what you want.

Unless you have it set for Duplicates (nd the guide data is correct) it will
know it has already recorded it by the episode number.

Set the "Keep at Most" to the number you want. It will delete the oldest to
record a newer one automatically.

Yes, it will record them all, but may delete earlier recordings to make room
for the newer ones.

Episode number will prevent duplicates (as long as you don't have it set to
record duplicates) so you should be fine. First run only to only record the
new eps and skip the repeats.

First Run means Original Air Date (OAD) is within 2 weeks of current date.
Repeats ignores OAD. Duplicates ignores episode number.

Maybe true for some shows, but take the "Daily Show," for instance.
First Run Only still sometimes records the same episode a few times
during the day. Haven't quite figured this out.

Ok, I think this is part of what I didn't understand. So it doesn't keep the
first 5, it keeps the 5 most recent. Correct?

OK, see this was always kind of nebulous in the oh-so-exhaustive DTV users
manual :-)

Somehow, that seems counter-intuitive to me, but that's more of what I want

When you say "make room" do you mean hard disk space, or do you mean until
the "keep at most" number is reached.

OK, then this is what I should do for Lost when it comes up again in the
fall - so I don't get the same current episode if ABC replays it during the
week. And if some reason, there's a conflict, it will still record the next
available current episode - right (of course Lost will be on the top of the
priority list this Fall :-)

That's why elsewhere in my response I mentioned if the guide data is
accurate. That's your issue with the Daily Show. With no unique guide
identifiers, the TiVo errs on the side of caution and records them all.

That;'s my understanding, it deletes the oldest to make room for the newer
(when trimming via Keep At Most settings). In practice I haven't actualy
experienced this on my TiVo as I watch things before too many pile up, or
things I record for filler I have set to ALL instead of a #. I'll try and
remember to check how it is working on my kids TiVo as I have a lot of their
programs set to K.A.M. of 3 or 4.

The thought is, the older episodes are "stale" and less relevant than the
newer ones.

Both. K.A.M. trimming where applicable, based on age vs free space when
running tight. That's what the different colored icons in Now Playing are
for. Yellow ball with an exclamation point means the program is elligible
for deletion if space is needed for something else.

For "Lost" (as well as most of my other shows) I have it set to "First Run
only" ). It will skip supes and repeats and only record fresh episodes. If
it gets trumped by something higher in priority, but plays again later in
the week with no higher priority conflicts, it gets recorded then.

This is one of the problems I have with the channel 11 evening news.
I set "first run and repeats, but no duplicates". I still get
the evening news at 10PM AND the replay at 1:23AM (or some such oddball
time). "first run only" seems to give me the same thing. It would
be nice to have accurate guide data ...

Unfortunately it is up to the channel in question to provide the data.
Maybe if enough people told the station that due to the lack of guide data
watching their channel was more trouble than it's worth, CC'ing a bunch of
sponsors or advertising firms, maybe then they would do something about it
to keep their viewers.

Lacking that, you can get around the issue by using a recurring manual
recording rather than an SP to catch the news.

You can set up a manual recording to go from 10PM-11PM (or whatever)
Monday-Friday on Channel 11 and get around the problem.

I ended up doing this with the Daily Show since its program info is
constantly wrong, and I got tired of having Tivo record 2 or 3 copies of
the same episode in one day. (For as many people complain about The Daily
Show issue, it seems like Tivo could push the listings provider to get it
straight.)

Admittedly this is more annoying than setting a season pass and won't take
any change of schedule into account, but the news is probably going to be
at the same time indefinitely. Once you set it, the manual recording will
show up in your season pass list, so you can give it an appropriate
priority.

Having just got TiVo, I started wondering how much influence networks had on
suggestions - it's obvious that Google is letting people pay to be on the
side bar, and it's obvious that the commercial for the Hummer and Saturn Sky
are paid for by someone.

I saw a post on TiVo commmunity forums that, from what I inferred, implies
that programmers are intentionally starting to do this sort of thing as the
DVR market expands so that their shows will still get recorded - starting
them minutes late or early for example, not including "repeat" in the
information, and things like that. I don't know how much of it is conspiracy
theory, but based on my experience with humans in a capitalist society, I
believe it.

Things like "Gold Star" items (on the main menu) and commercials with
TiVomatic content are directly paid fro by the advertiser.

I haven't seen any proof that suggestions are influenced. But the word
"repeat" appearing (or not) in the description has little bearing on if TiVo
thinks it is a repeat or not. OAD within 2 weeks=first run else repeat.

The starting shows early or late has nothing to do with DVRs. That's just
fitting a few more commercials into a show. ER is still 42 minutes long,
but it's time slot is 1:01 so they can fit more commercials in while the
time slot for the show prior to it, with lower ratings (thus lower
advertising value( is slotted at 0:59.
