Just picked up a 2nd hand hard drive 2.5" IBM Travelstar and ran IBM's Drive Fitness Test and comes up with error "0x22" drive is write protected. Any Ideas?

  1. Probably a BIOS setting, otherwise you could try FDISK MBR.

    What's the frequency, Kenneth?
  2. This is a protection for laptop HDDs that sets a PW on the HDD to match a BIOS PW. That way, someone that steals your laptop can't get at your data - even if they remove the disk and put it in another system. I think you will have to call IBM on this one.

In my experience, the only way to disable the PW is to:
    1) Set the BIOS PW on a compatible laptop to whatever the PW on the HDD is. If you don't know the PW you're out of luck unless you call IBM.
    2) Then install the protected HDD into the pre-configured laptop.
    3) Then disable the PW.

If the thought I thought I thought had been the thought I thought, I wouldn't have thought so much.
  3. I tried this and it worked, in Windows 7. Start Cmd.exe as administrator, then:

    C:\> Diskpart

    DISKPART> list disk
    DISKPART> select disk (id)
DISKPART> online disk (if the disk is not online)
    DISKPART> attributes disk clear readonly

Then I was able to manipulate the volume in Disk Management control panel.
