I have a Toshiba RSTX20 Tivo-compatible DVR. I want to add a second Tivo
machine in another room and transfer files across my LAN between the two
machines, but I don't want to pay the monthly service fee on the second
machine. I simply want to use the second machine as a player, without
recording off cable. Is this possible?

No, you don't get any of the transfer capabilities without a paid subscription.
But there is the reduced fee for subsequent subscriptions (still probably too
much esp since you don't want to record on the secondary one.)

Also, just to state the probably obvious, Series 1s don't have the
Home Media Option (or whatever they renamed it to after it became free)
capabilities at all, so a used unsubscribed series 1 obviously won't help
in this case.

Except maybe getting an unsubbed Series 1 and then hacking both units, but
you'd probably still have to FTP from Tivo 1 to a PC, then from the PC to
Tivo 2.
