I got a 5040 that finally went dead. I was able to resurrect the 40 GIG HD
once a while ago, but to no avail this time. I stumbled upon this ad

It's not in the Replay anymore. Replaced with Western digital 120GB.

believe was an "RLL" drive, don't know the brand.

I had an Emerson 12 Mhz Turbo 286 - with math co-processor I might add...
and a 10 meg Seagate MFM hard drive.. 8)
That was an upgrade from my dual 5-1/4" floppy Commodore 128. Which was an
upgrade from my audio cassette storage Timex Sinclair. Which was an upgrade
from another audio tape storage computer, my dear first computer, Trash 80
Color...

Not to be outdone:

My first external hard drive for my Macintosh+ (all in one-8" screen) was a
20 GB and it set me back... Ready?..... $1299.

At that time, ~ 1987, I thought NO ONE would need more than 20GB for
ANYTHING.

Can't imagine what is going to happen in the next couple of decades...

I thought so too, but 30MB RLL drives didn't cost much more than 20MB
MFM ones.

Heh - Several of my friends worked for Leading Edge. :-) Though that
was mainly in the 386-through-Pentium days, post 286.

In the days of the 286 and the 8088, RLL drives were indeed used

The story of how the Winchester drive got it's name....

Well, it was designed and developed by IBM as the model 3030

They decided not to produc it, Turns out there is a company named
"Winchester" and they make a .3030 (note the addition of the decmil)
