i just downloaded womble mpeg video wizard to test out for editing my
recorded shows. I can't seem to figure out how to "cut" the commercials out
quickly. The help isn't that great either. Can anyone point me to some
online tutorials or just give me the 2 minute how to? I just need to get on
the right track and then I can figure out the rest.

if anyone out there who has this application and has used it and wouldn't
mind helping me out a little, i'd sincerely appreciate it, not to mention
you would be making my life just a little easier; good karma for you!

In order to be fully compatible to burn to dvd w/o video/audio sync
problems you should split the file up and putthe segments on the
clipboard and re-assemble.

ie:

1) look at the first part and when the first commercial begins, put mark
out indicator.

2) Save this to clipboard (#1)

3) go to the end of the commercial and put a "mark in" when the next
commercial appears put a "mark out".

4) Save this to clipboard.

5) Repeat 3 and 4 till you are done.

6) Close the center box.

7) drag the last clip to the center.

8) move the "in point" to the beginning.

9) Drag the next clip to the center. The screen that pops up allows you
to add effects like fade and wipe if you desire.

10) repeat 8 and 9 till you're finished

11) Save the file (round cylinder pictograph)

Womble's big brother MPEG Wizard allows you to load the Replay .evt file
and automatically put in the bookmarks for the commercials. Tweak them
and hit done and it will remove the commercials and re-assemble the file.

They used to have two "how-tos" posted, which helped me get started ... and
give me a refresher when I haven't used the software for a while. But now I
see that both are no longer there. They do have a forum now, however.

I use that program regularly, and you can edit commercials much more
easily than some people think.

1. Move the slider to the beginning of the commercial.

2. Click the "mark in" button (it's an arrow pointing to the left and
then up).

3. Move the slider to the end of the commercial.

4. Click the "mark out" button (i.t's an arrow pointing to the right
and then up).

5. Click the "cut" button (it's the leftmost of the 3 buttons that
look like scissors).

The result will not be on disk until you save it. Be sure to use a
DIFFERENT filename from the source.

Are you talking about the "Input Window" ? I see a "Mark In" and a "Mark
Out". I only see two scissors buttons "Trim Left" and "Trim Right".
Following the other directions I was able to trim from the start of the show
to the first commercial, drag that to the timeline window. Trim from the end
of the first commercials to the begining of the second commercials and drag
that to the time line, etc... to the end of the show.

When I tried with the above instructions, I only got the commercials.

hey all, thanks for the help and advice. i have it figured out now at a
basic enough level to at least get the show from my RTV to my PC and edit
out the commercials with Womble.

Now i'm going to try and use TMPGEnc to reencode it for VCD burning. Any
advice or pitfalls to avoid?

open a file.

I have 3. Those 2 and one immediately to the left of them labeled
"cut" on the line at the bottom. I don't remember having seen only 2
(and I've used it to edit about 700 different shows).

You would using one of the "trim" buttons". You use both "mark in" and
"mark out", and then the "cut" button to remove the material between
them.

While replying, I've been trying opening several video files (most
Replay transfers) and have not gotten ANY to show only 2 scissors
buttons. Could you possibly have the wrong version of MPEG-VCR? When I
click on "Help > "About..." the first line I get says "MPEG-VCR V3.14
(MPEG-2) (06/2004)".

There's no need for that. The output of MPEG-VCR is suitable for
burning already. If you want to reencode, you can get MPEG-VCR to do
that (look at the "video" options while saving.

When I first started making DVDs from the Replay, I was using TMPGEnc
and had a significant failure (audio stuttering) rate. About 20% of
DVDs had to be redone because of it. Swithcing to MPEG-VCR solved that
problem.

That may be the diference: MPEG-VCR, I am trying "MPEG Video Wizard". When
people speak of "Womble", I went to the web site and thought the "video
wizard" is what everyone was using. I will d/l the mpeg-vcr and give it a
try.

I got the Mpeg-VCR and it worked like a charm. Burned two videos to a DVD
with Roxio and played in the DVD player with no problems. It is nice to have
others to help you along.
