Hey guys, I got windows server 2008 r2 from my school for cheap so i decided to install it on an old desktop i had laying around just so i could do it.
asus board (came out of a Compaq! it mounted up in my case and accepted my 530W psu )
cpuz calls the board "guppy" by asus corp. Its an oem board for sure.
integrated graphics
40gb os drive
160gb data drive
obviously old slow hardware
Now i have a pentium 4 @ 3ghz just sitting here but when i installed it, windows did not want to boot. bios showed the cpu at 2ghz so im thinking its a combination of windows using the wrong driver and the bios needing an update (if there is one)
my concern is this, my file transfers from my desktop to the server go at about 1mb a second ave. It has always been like this for as long as i can remember (modded xbox FTP to my desktop used to always be 1mb a second?) So it sounds like a network problem. my router is a Linksys WRT54G/GS/GL running tomato. all ports are forwarded correctly for ftp, remote desktop (all that good stuff)
So two things, how can i make file transfers on the network faster like they should be and would it be worth it to go through the trouble of getting the pentium 4 to run. it has twice as much cache iirc and .4ghz more clock speed soo...?
im new to this server business but its just for fun without having to spend any money. might also host torrents for a couple sites im on but it would see very little traffic on a day to day basis, most of which would be me downloading homework assignments back and forth to my phone or my laptop.
im wishing i didnt sell my am2 ddr2 setup, that was lightyears faster than this thing
