A year or so ago I was lucky enough to stumble across a large
collection of laserdiscs which I have enjoyed alot. I had been using a
denon la-2300 which is a pretty decent player but I had been wanting
something more. A few days ago I ran across the elite cld-79 for a nice
price and jumped on it. I tested the basic functions when I got it home
and everything seemed to work ok. Several days went by and I didnt have
time to mess with it until tonight. I wanted to do a side by side
comparo of my two players. I had them going directly to a 25" zenith
that is about 8 years old, but was nice in its day. After playing
several discs it caught my attention that alot more speckles were
present on the cld-79 than on the denon. I played about 5 different
movies and found my self being destracted because of the speckles alot
more often on the cld-79 than on the denon. I know the pioneer is a
better player so I am now wondering if there is a problem with it? Does
anyone have any opinions on this?

I was talking to a guy today about this and he told me there should be
a VDNR button on the player to reduce the "speckles", but when I looked
at my player I did not see this button, is it only on the remote?
Because I dont have it or the manual. Is there anyone here that has
this player and can shed some light on this? or where to get a manual
and remote?

It sounds like your player needs to be serviced (probably the laser
needs aligned). There are really only two folks that I know of that
can do this for you at a reasonable price -- Duncan at Bayview
Electronics (WA) or Kurtis Bahr (VA).

Yes, many of the 79's operations are controlled via the remote --
including the jog shuttle and the V-DNR.

The original remote for the 79 is the Pioneer CU-CLD120. They pop up
on eBay now and again. I assume that the remote that comes with the 99
and S9 also have the V-DNR, but I can't be certain. Anyone?

The DVNR Button on the CU-CLD098 won't work. The CLD-79 and CLD-99 use two
buttons on the remote to control DVNR, you need either the 79 or 99 remote
for this unit. But from your original description you must have the correct
remote as you mentioned you had them on the remote. The one item I do not
like about the 79/99 is that the front panel buttons are extremely limited,
if you bought a CLD-D704 you could control it from the front.

On the 99, one button selects which stored DVNR settings you want and the
other allows you to change the settings. You then use the dial to change
the DVNR setting.

As for your seeing more speckles. As you get to the players with a sharper
picture the artifacts/defects are more easily seen. The need for alignment
would be crosstalk or high background noise levels. If it is just normal
speckles then it is either a bad pressing or LD's with laserrot.

thanks for the help. If the laser does need to be realigned does any
now about how much it cost to have done? Also is this something BB or
CC can do or should I ship it to an expert?

If you need an alignment, chances are you need a cleaning and lube
and general tune-up also.

No, no, no, no, no!!!! I'd give it to Radio Shack first
before I'd go anywhere near either of those places.

Definitely. On the East Coast, Kurtis Bahr is your man.
He will probably respond to your post.

On the West Coast, Duncan Hunter will treat you properly.
He is arguably the pre-eminent LD service specialist, period.

I can help on the east coast and laserdisc service on the west coast. The
only problem is that I'm not really positive you have a problem. As I
mentioned in an earlier post, the 79 will have a sharper picture and that
also means pressing defects and laserrot are easier to see. Your Denon has
a softer picture and that softness tends to hide small defects.

Now, if you are seeing wavy lines, the tracking freezes or skip to the end
or the noise levels are high then it should be looked at. Some people
prefer the softer image as the sharper does reveal everything.

This may be a dumb question but what exactly does noise look like? Also
are models such as the ld-s2, cld-97, cld-99 and other high end players
the same way as far as revealing more defects on the disc?

Pick a disc with a scene that has deeply saturated reds or oranges and
you'll see chroma noise. It's ugly. The climax of Alien 3 (domestic LD
from Fox) is a prime offender. The opening sequence to Bram Stoker's
Dracula is another one.

For Luminance noise look at blue sky scenes or gray backgrounds and looks
and see if it has a moving grain look in it.

With this and Joshua's note below you'll start to see where the older
players surpass the newer 99.

I've played back several discs and I didnt see any noise so I guess
everything is ok. The only thing I did noitce but its probably nothing
is that when I pause a movie the image appears to lose quality but when
I resume playback the image returns to normal. Also when I first power
on the player and insert a disc the screen is black and says laserdisc
in the top left corner and play in the top right corner which is normal
but for some reason the word laserdisc appears to shake on the screen
its not bad and you have to be looking at it to see, and I cant figure
that out.

Probably just your TV sync'ing to the players output. I wouldn't worry
about it.

Interlacing alternates every 1/60th of a second
between odd and even horizontal scan lines,
so every 1/30th of a second a frame, or image,
is displayed at 30 frames per second.

So, when you pause the player,
you will get either the odd scan lines only,
or the even scan lines only,
or perhaps even some ghastly combination of the two.

Hence the perceived loss of quality, as there IS a loss of quality.
