Xtending router antenna with wire?

Forum Wireless Networking : Range & Connectivity Xtending router antenna with wire?

Do you think this would be possible?

My housemates have been having a trouble with network coverage in my house, the router is located in the basement of my house, perfect for me as my room is also down there (Ethernet, thank you very much). Unfortunately my housemate in the attic room's signal seems to be a problem.

I'm wondering if it would be possible to remove one of my routers two antennas solder some copper wire to the spot it was removed, then have the wire go up to the 1st floor and re-solder the antenna up there (mount it on the wall or something). I'm confident with the practicalities of actually doing this, but I'm not that techie when it comes to electronics. I'm not sure whether it would need more power to boost it over such a distance.

Any input would appreciated, I would actually quite like to do this if its possible, nice little weekend project.

Cheers

You will need to use shielded coax cable to connect from the router to a short piece of plain wire for the antenna.

Thanks for for the reply, is shielded coax cable the same thing as coaxial cable?

Also is the wire that would go from a Sky satellite dish to the Sky box be coaxial cable, as we have a good length of that lying about.

Yes, all coax has a shield, but you want a coax with a GOOD shield and an impedance of 50 ohms.
