You can connect two machines with a crossover CAT 5 cable, HERE are some tips on the setup. Otherwise you can get a switch and use CAT 5 patch cables or router (if you want to add Internet connectivity from an ISP).

If both pc's have gigabit ethernet, you should be able to use a straight thru cable as the gigabit specs call for auto MDI-X, otherwise use a crossover cab;e as stated.
