My laptop doesn't have a dvd drive and I need to reload the o/s.
I see in the bios the option to boot from an external drive and/or a network. How do I find out how this works?

You need a usb cd/dvd drive to boot from, or with some work you could use a mem key to reinstall Windows. The easy option is to go with the usb cd drive though.

There are lots and lots of options for that, here is the first one that came up for me.
