Ethernet 10/100 over twisted pair

Forum General Networking : General Discussion Ethernet 10/100 over twisted pair

Hello,

I have an interesting problem. I need to send telephone and an Ethernet connection over just two twisted pairs over a 30 meters distance (with 3 twisted pairs my problem would be solved as I can use two twisted pairs to send a 10M ethernet connection).

Is there a way to modulate Ethernet over a single twisted pair, at least at 10Mbit/s?

What do you think?
Cheers

Cat5 cable has 4 pair of wires, two pairs are needed for 10/100 ethernet:

TX+
TX-
RX+
RX-

You might be able to get away with using one of the non-used pairs for the phone, but may suffer throughput loss as the unused pairs are used to get rid of crosstalk on the data lines.

Hello,

My problem is that I don't have a Cat5. I only have two physical pairs! Fine for a 10/100 ethernet but not fine if I have to send a telephone line as well.

I've seen MUX's/deMUX's for phone and ethernet over a fiber line, but not for copper. Maybe someone else has a solution.

My tentative solution would be to use one pair for telephone and the other pair for Ethernet by using a HomePNA adapter/media converter. My problem is that HomePNA adapters for phone lines are expensive and/or hard to find.
