Sorry new to networking but when I log-in to my firewall I don't have an IP address for the outside interface, does this sound logical? Any way I 'm just basically trying to get a network connection.

I'm guessing when you say firewall you mean router, and it isn't getting an ip from your cable or dsl modem. The first thing I would check is to make sure the line coming from the modem is plugged into the wan port on your router, after that unplug the power on your modem then plug it back in and give it a few minutes.
