[Solved] Transfering files from Windows XP pc to Windows 7 laptop uk

Hi.
My current pc uses Windows XP professional, but it has been dying a slow death for some time now.

I have been gifted a brand new laptop, which when started up says "welcome to your new desktop" and this uses Windows 7.

How do I tansfer files etc. from my pc to my laptop please? I have tried using USB wireless method, and although I have installed the driver for the Wireless USB driver the procedure only gets to a certain point and I get a message on the screen telling me "unable to complete action; Device is not ready". I get no options other than cancel.

I will be grateful for any advice anyone can give me.

If both systems are connected to the router, either wired or wireless, any breakdown of file transfer has to be down to settings. On the Windows 7 system, in Control Panel>Network and Sharing Centre, ignore the Homegroup and click on Networking instead. Scroll down to the password section and set that so no password is required on any other computer in the network. Also tick to allow file and printer sharing then open Computer form the Start menu and go to Users then right click your account name's folder. Under Sharing and Security, tick to share and to allow other users to make changes. Restart the computer.

In the XP system, run the Network Setup Wizard in Control Panel and make sure you set the Workgroup name to WORKGROUP because that's what your W7 setup will be set to. In Explorer, go to your Documents folder and right click it. Under Sharing and Security, tick to share it and to allow other users to make changes to files. Restart that system and, hopefully, networking will work smoothly.
