I don't know how new are we talking. But for me my perosnal favourites are: Saving Private Ryan, Flags of our Fathers, We were soldiers and there are a few others that i can't remember. However without doubt Band of Brothers is the best. Even though it isn't a film this has a great story line with great character development and its based on a true story. A definate watch! http://newcasltestudents.comuv.com/imgs/signature_smiley6.jpg

Check out Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, The Great Escape, Glory (I know, that's an older war period), Platoon, Schindler's List and Good Morning Vietnam for a good laugh.

I don't know why Apocalypse now is so famous. I thought it was one of the most boring movies I've ever seen.

It's the underlying psychological story that people find intriguing.

Also, add Basic to my list. It's not really about a war but takes place on a military base. I love movies with a lot of twists and when you mix Samuel L Jackson and John Travolta together...you usually get something great.

My favorites are Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket.
Both of which tries to explain the psychological effects war has on people (and have pretty good action sequences to boot).

Full Metal Jacket tries to explain what it takes to mentally prepare a normal person for war and then how they act in it. Apocalypse Now explains what can happen when you are in a war for a prolonged period of time.

Here are some decent war films:
