Need help!!!!!

I have 2 floors and a basement in my home. I had a regular verizon router that couldn't pull a signal into my basement so I decided to purchase a Cisco Linksys e2500 today. Dual band sounded exactly like what I needed (very noob of me).

The router is in the middle of the house on the first floor, the basement is open via stairs and no walls or doors interfering.

With help of linksys customer service I got my router working. Sitting next to the router, via 2.4ghz WiFi, I get 40mbps down, when I take my macbook to the basement I have full service bars, however, barely any internet service. 1-2mbps down at best.

on 5ghz I get nothing! no internet connection at all and barely a router connection.

What am i doing wrong?

Someone please help!

First, the bars mean very little; they really just show relative strength are not calibrated.

2nd, the higher the frequency, the more easily it is stopped by obstructions.
