based on a friends specs, which are the same except for the processor and RAM:
AMD Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition Deneb 3.60 GHz
Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB)
My Windows System Rating is 5.9, whereas my friend's was around 7.3. Additionally, we both ran the Final Fantasy 14 benchmark, and my friend scored about 40% higher than I did. Did I do something wrong when building my computer? Or is the difference in the memory and processor that significant?
The FX series AMD processors are not very good at gaming which is why the black edition scored better. Also (and I would like some extra confirmation here from someone more experienced with power supplies) I'd be careful using a "raidmax" power supply. Power supplies are hands down the one thing you should never cheap out on as it could potentially destroy your machine.
The system rating is most likely due to your hard drive. (The system will provide a rank based upon the lowest score). I've never seen hard drives rank above 5.9. Using an SSD should get you up into the 7 range...
A 40% difference in a gaming benchmark does seem harsh. But you can see some other pretty large gaps opening between the 4100 and other CPU benchmarks:
From LegitReviews: AMD FX 4100 Black Edition review 3DMark Vantage CPU benchmark about a 35% difference in the FX 4100 and X4 980 (3.7Ghz)
(but the overall Vantage benchmark score was only 15%)
@WR2 No, I got advice from my friends who had just built a computer with the specs I listed, but with changes they suggested since I didn't have quite as much to spend on a computer. I guess maybe we skimped a bit too much on the processor
I don't think so. It would be wrong to judge just based on a few benchmarks.
Sure, it's a budget build. But I think it's pretty well balanced.
I think you have enough CPU power to back up that graphics card.
Have you done any actual gaming? How is that going?
Having 5.9 Windows Experience is not necessarily bad for gaming. I have 5.9 as well, because of HDD, but others are over 7, and have no problem playing demanding games. Take it easy.
