Hi guys, I am looking for recommendations for a reputable webhost after getting sick of the BS you have to put up with from free hosting companies.

The website probably doesn't need much bandwidth, probably expecting only a few hundred unique visitors - it is a non-profit medical education site. It does however need to be reliable and by a company that isn't constantly trying to mess you around. We can afford paid hosting but I only want to pay if the experience is going to be noticeably better than with free hosts. A UK company would be preferable but not essential. We already have a registered domain name, just looking for something with a few gigs of space/bandwidth which supports a basic SQL+PHP website with text, pictures and perhaps small amounts of embedded video/audio (though we might just host the videos on Youtube).

If anyone with positive personal experiences of companies could make a recommendation then that would be enormously helpful.

I can't fault Verio - they service my small requirement for about $11 (£8) a month

It is not easy to find a good and reliable web host. It can indeed be very though to find the best one. I am very happy that I have finally found the right web host for my requirements.
