Issue installing Asus AMD Radeon graphic cards

I am trying to install 2 asus radeon 6990 graphic cards but the asus smart doctor alerts that "cannot detect asus graphic cards" plus in the graphic device adapter in windows device manager it has the drivers for asus radeon 6550 installed and not the drivers I loaded from the software cd of the graphic cards.

Is there a proper procedure for installing the 6990 graphic cards?

uninstall all graphics drivers

install newest drivers from the internet not from the cd

try to find asus gpu tweak software rather than asus smart doctor

smart doctor wouldnt recognise my asus direct cu gtx570 but asus gpu tweak works perfectly with it

Well i am confused. Are you trying to Xfire a 6550 with a 6990?, Cant be done. Put its a simple procedure for Installing GPU's. Just find the PCI Express 2.0 (2.1) and take take the crossfire Cable and connect it to the pins. then install second card and connect it to the cable. Once that's done make sure the Power Cables are plugged into all PCI e power points in the Graphics cards. Now boot into windows and go to device manager and install the latest driver. make sure the drivers are the same for both cards

Ok, so instead of disabling the graphic drivers on the windows device manager just uninstall them.

Any changes to the BIOS required such as changing the graphic settings to PCI express?

yes uninstall the drivers and catalyst control center if you had it installed previously--the bios should already be

set to boot 1st from pci-e even if it isnt it will still boot once it didnt find anything else to boot from

I have 2 asus radeon 6990 cards to install, not sure why the motherboard/graphic control is detecting 6550 drivers.

Should I setup one card first and then install the second after as I plan on setting them up for crossfire?

Still the same issue, after following the guide and setting the BIOS to PCI express, the downloaded catalyst suite and drivers still setup the drivers for the 6550 graphic cards! Is there anything else I am missing? Should the graphic cards be taken out at the start and inserted after downloading and setting up the software and drivers.

I attempted the installation this way:
1. Graphic cards inserted
2. Set BIOS to PCI Express
3. Uninstall existing graphic drivers (6550 drivers auto detected from 6990 cards)
4. Download catalyst suite and drivers and install
5. Reboot and 6550 drivers are then automatically installed

What else should be done to get the 6990 drivers?

is this the driver you are using?

do you have an old graphics card or onboard graphics from before?

if so uninstall drivers 1st

turn off pc and remove old card

insert new cards

turn on pc and if asked do not install drivers automatically

install latest driver from amd site

reboot

in your list you inserted the cards before removing old drivers

was your old card a 6550?

No this is a new build with no existing graphic cards.

It is a 64 bit machine so downloaded the software and drivers from here:

The reason it is detecting th 6550 drivers is due to the onboard graphics:

did you plug in all the power adapters?

also have you tried reseating the cards and making sure firmly in the pci slot?

do you have the crossfire bridge on them?

Crossfire bridge was attached when both graphic cards were installed during the original build

yeah thats the same driver just my link was 32 bit

i get it the cpu has integrated graphics like the new intel cpus

is there a bios option to disable the on chip graphics?

or if no disable option there should be one for 1st display device--set that to pci-e

Ok, I just connected an extra PCI-E cable to each graphics card and when I turned on there was no output in the monitor via HDMI or VGA.

Is it best to take out the cards, setup the BIOS and disable the integrated drivers first or are the graphic cards the problem?

try installing just one card to see what happens

cant see both cards being faulty

and your psu is powerfull enough

if one card works then take it out and try the other card--one could be faulty

edit--do those cards take 2 x 8 pin connectors in each card?

I have both cards connected, each card has 2X6 pin connector with a PCI-E cable in each connector on both cards.

Monitor is connected via HDMI to one of the cards, tried both and no output.

Crossfire connecting both cards.

I took out the cards and changed the BIOS to this:
disable IGFX monitor
enable PCIE as primary video device
set integrated graphics as auto (other option is force)
HDMI/DVI port output set as auto (other option is force)
PCIXE16_1/DP Port outport set as auto (other option is force)

Onboard graphics driver is disabled (AMD Radeon 6550)

I guess the cabling is not correct or the BIOS option are not correct?

i thought 6990 took 2 x 8 pin not 2 x 6 pin?

if its 2 x 8 pin and you are only putting 2 x 6 pin then thats the problem

edit--looks like 2 x 8 pin

I got the output working! As you pointed out about the 2X8 pins ports on each card, I only used the 8 pin cable that came with each card and then plugged only 6 pins of each PCI-E cable in each of the 6 pin cable extension of the 8 pin.

So I just plugged in 2 PCI-E cables into both 8 pin ports on each card and it worked.

Now to install the drivers next. Will update once I have it done.

I have successfully installed the graphics drivers, ASUS EAH6990, for both cards.

I opted to use the software CD accompanying the graphic cards and have Smart Doctor running to monitor the graphic cards http://img.tomshardware.com/forum/uk/icones/smile.gif
