[Solved] HD 6950 micro-stuttering + tearing fix for extended displays

Forum Graphic & Displays : AMD Radeon [Solved] HD 6950 micro-stuttering + tearing fix for extended displays

Word :    Username :

I recently bought a MSI Twin Frozr III HD 6950, and was blown away by how great it was compared to my old 9600 GT. It's the first machine I've ever assembled and my brother in-law helped me put it together.

New Rig:

i5-2500k overclocked to 4.5 ghz
Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3
MSI Twin Frozr III HD 6950
8gb Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600
Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit
TR2 600W Power Supply

PROBLEM

Persistently there would be strange "ghost" images that would randomly flash in a millisecond on my extended monitor which happened more frequently whenever I watched a video. On top of that, my games would have a strange micro-stutter that I couldn't get rid of and nothing seemed to move fluidly like water despite having 60+ FPS. I've read for hours on solutions and I fiddled with every option available, uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, turned off HDMI audio, underclocked GPU settings and increased power control percentage. Nothing.

It started to worsen with time as it began to have very noticeable horizontal tearing with constant stuttering. I felt like I had to already return this video card after 1 week because it may have been a damaged or bad card. It wasn't until I noticed the "ghosts" were random windows from the second display. I found out that my brother-in-law may have swapped the primary and secondary display ports and then set the software to auto-switch them back to "normal" position, thinking it wouldn't be an issue.

SOLUTION

After I re-swapped the cables so that the primary was on the bottom connector and the secondary on top, then all the problems I've been having, stuttering, tearing, and "ghosts" all disappeared. I've spent nearly 20 hours in the past week alone trying to find all possible causes and reasons why I was having these problems and the reason why was because of misplaced cables. The cause was Windows 7 being set to act that my extended was a primary and my primary an extended, thus sending my video card all kinds of goofy signals and making it act all haywire. I am posting this both because I am finally elated to solve this issue and also for anyone else that may be having these same problems.

Edit: Oops! I also forgot to mention that disabling hardware acceleration in flash made the artifacts also go away after I switched displays.
