Hello,
I have a XFX 9800GT GPU. The card had been working well for a quite some time now, but recently, I have started running into a problem where after a few minutes, the display freezes with artifacts. This does not happen if the drivers are not loaded or during a POST messages. Does this point to a faulty GPU or a problem with the motherboard? Unfortunately, I do not have a second system where I can check this. Any advice would be appreciated.

its gfx ram. try either underclocking the ram or providing better cooling by uping the fan speed.

Failing that you can try the "oven bake" technique to help resolder the points on the card...

Good Luck

Hi,
Thanks for replying. I tried to underclock the ram, but that bought me only a couple of minutes more. Before trying the oven bake method, what precautions do I need to take and for how long should I keep it in the oven?

Thanks

I would do a quick google for a how to article. There are plenty floating around. I have never actually done it myself, but I am pretty sure you just take off the H/S and Fan and any plastic mounts etc.

Lay it as flat as possible "gpu" side up (i think) and bake some temperature for 6-7 mins. Honestly, look up a tutorial/how-to or two (or three) and use the method that seems to have the best feedback.
