Another MSI AMD Radeon HD 6950 OC Twin FrozR II?

Hey everybody,
I’m new in town and enjoying all the info.

So I have this gaming PC:

ASUS Crosshair IV Formula / AMD Phenom II X6 1090T @ 3.7GHz / MSI AMD Radeon HD 6950 OC Twin FrozR II 2048MB GDDR5 / 16GB of RAM.

And I was thinking of putting it up to 4GB of graphics memory by getting a second MSI AMD Radeon HD 6950 OC Twin FrozR II in crossfire. And installing a 1000W-1200W PSU.

Is it worth me doing that?

Or should I just save up and get a high end 6990 4GB? The MSI AMD Radeon HD 6950 OC Twin FrozR II is a LOT cheaper and if I can get 4GB for a much lower price, I'd like that. I read the 6990 is very loud too...

And is there a difference between a 2GB Graphics Card and the 4GB Graphics Card, performance wise when talking about gaming in 2012?

the 2 6950 is a better choice. the 6990 is 2 underclocked 6970s taped together.

and the memory won't change as crossfire will split the memory in game to both gpus so total memory will be unchanged.

And 2 gb is plenty for gaming in the near future as right now we are not even using 1 gb of vram in games at 1080p.

you also don't need a 1000w psu for crossfire 6950s. 750w is enough.

^^ Why answer when someone else has? You would be better off with the two 6950's or wait and get the 7950's with 3GB of Vram.

Yeah I heard the 6970 is not too far away from the 6950.

It's just that I already have an MSI Radeon 6950 2GB Twin Frozr II and really like it and wouldn't mind getting another for playing on max settings.

If I plan to play @ 2560x1600 does the 4GB have an advantage over the 2GB or absolutely none?

So a 750W will be fine for 2 6950 in crossfire?...(Coolermaster Gx 750W will do then)...Someone told me I need 1000W-1200W...

Corsair, Antec, Seasonic, and a XFX and make sure that they are 80+ type. These are the brands of PSU's to get.

When the games start using 2GB of Vram then it will use 2GB of Vram. If you have 2 cards with 2GB of Vram on the two cards then you use just 2GB of Vram you can't add both cards to get 4GB of Vram.

Really? Wow not really worth getting a 6990 then if you can just double up in crossfire.

So I'm not quite getting...if I have 2x2GB (4GB in crossfire) I still only have a max 2GB, even if some day a game may require 3GB or 4GB of VRAM? I have been checking some other forums and it seem so...they mention words like ''mirrored'' and ''effectively ''...I am still new to gaming PCs and trying to understand.

I think I will hold on to my single 2GB 6950 as it perform very well.

It’s just that some games sill lag (not every time but in certain places) but that seem to be bad programming…But Crysis runs so smooth and it's one of the most demeaning games out there.

That’s what I though, I get 4GB now (and can’t really put it to good use) but soon it might be too old to work with newer games. With Windows 8 coming out soon and 2013-2014 ‘’Next gen games’’ who know?

If you aren't playing above 1080P 2gb of vram isn't needed.

The new AMD 7xxx series come with 3 gigs of Vram. I suppose if the games start using more Vram then the cards will have to adjust also.

Like what everybodys else is saying now if your res is over 1920 x 1200 plus more than one monitor the more Vram the better.
