will plugging in a 20 pin power source into a 24 pin atx motherboard work or do I need an adapter

I meant the atx slot on the motherboard which has 24 pins the power source plug in only has 20 pins I was told that the 20pin will work when plugged into the 24 pin slot is that right or should i get an adapter
