On LCD's it is pixel count that gives the native resolution! Better explained here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_resolution

1680 x1050 is from era where factories could not cut there screens to the perfect 1080p. 1680 x1050 is called 16x10 format its just short 30 to be perfect 1080p but its classified as 1080p

720p 1280×720
1080p 1920x1080

It depends on your monitor if you want bigger then 1080p you need to shell out some $$$
The bigger the resolution the bigger video card you need,
The difference is barely noticeable to average person specially beyond 1080p
There actually no content on market to take benefit above 1080p (some games only can)

you are above 720p,which is 1280X720...but you are below 1080p,which is 1920x1080........

I think every bit makes quite a big difference. Basically, you need greater resolution for larger screen sizes; if you try to put 1920x1080 on a 27" screen, it just doesn't look very good. I'd love 2560x1600 on a 24-incher, but nobody makes that.
