Overlock CPU or add more RAM?

Forum Homebuilt Systems : Homebuilt Overlock CPU or add more RAM?

Word :    Username :

I've got a stock i5 2500k, and 4gb Corsair XMS3 RAM. I want to upgrade one of them.

For the CPU:
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/coo [...] 155-775-fm
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/coo [...] 6-am3-am2p
They're the coolers I'm looking at.

For the RAM:
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/8gb [...] 24-xmp-15v
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/8gb [...] -9-24-150v
I have 2 questions about the RAM:
1. Do I have to use only 2 type of RAM, or can I mix and match e.g Corsair Vengeance and Corsair XMS3 RAM in the same PC?
2. Can I use different sizes of RAM, e.g 2x2gb and 2x4gb in the same PC?

I'm currently playing swtor, Skyrim, BF3 and TF2.

Cpu cooler : Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO http://www.scan.co.uk/products/coo [...] 56-1366-am £23.98
You can use different sizes of RAM in the same PC.
For the best stability is recommended to use the same type of RAM.
The Corsair memory have almost 100% compatibility with all mobos. Ill recomend you http://www.scan.co.uk/products/8gb [...] 24-xmp-15v

Well its kind of up to you. Do you want to add more heat but a faster CPU. Or you you want more range for more multi tasking. My Machine uses up 5 gigs of my 8GB set up. If there some sort of Performance level issue your having? Something your trying to achieve by upgrading?

What sort of speeds can you get with that? I was hoping to get a least 4ghz with overclocking. Also, will a 650w PSU be enough for it?

Not really, I just have a bit of extra cash and wanted to upgrade my specs. Essentially I want to get the best band for my buck. Does having 8gb RAM outweigh a 4ghz processor?

Yes a 650W PSU is enough for your build. With Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO you can overclock that CPU easy to 4.5Ghz.

if all your doing is gaming i would oc the cpu and leave ram alone if you photo edit video edit more ram leave cpu alone the more ram the more power the memory control use from the cpu power resulting in slower cpu performance and if you wont use the extra ram its a waste of cpu power (4 gigs is good 8 gigs is in most cases without the above mentioned editing its just overkill)

Do you reckon that this Hyper 212 would be alright?

The Hyper 212+ is compatible with LGA 1155.
In its reviews, people are using it for i5 2500k as well as i7 2600k
